While most people in Seattle think of Mt. Rainier, it is Mt. Baker that dominates the horizon in the northern reaches of Puget Sound. Unlike Mt. Rainier, Mt. Baker doesn’t have as many easily accessed vantage points. This particular one requires a decent walk into the backcountry and a little exploring, but the pay off was oh-so-worth-it. On this particular day, the clouds crept in right at sunset, and the wind was perfectly calm, allowing this unbelievable reflection to happen in the lake!

The Olympic Coast is a special place to many of us here in Washington State, and Ruby Beach is near the top of my list. I seem to manage to visit in the winter more than the summer, but regardless of the season, the views never disappoint. Getting an image like this requires getting a little wet, but it’s worth it!

A solitary man under the Milky Way, ironing his clothes next to two old trees? Why not? I shot this image in the North Cascades on a beautiful June night and love nearly everything about it.
What is extreme ironing? Extreme ironing combines an extreme sport or circumstance with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt, and I can’t think of a better place to iron than under the stars!

I took this image in the East Slopes of the Central Cascades of Washington, from high on a ridge overlooking the forested valleys towards the crest. I went to this location looking for Milky Way and aurora, but the surprise was this amazing light just before the sun went down. The rock in the valley below was an amazing touch.

On the east slopes of the Central Cascades, it is Mount Stuart that steals the show. Rising to just shy of 10,000 feet, it is one of the largest hunks of granite in the state, and one of the most photogenic. I took this image from a nearby ridgeline after hiking for a few hours. What started as a warm day turned into a freezing, howling wind, with windchill down to around 2F. The clouds were passing the mountain quickly, and so good timing was essential to make the image you see here.

It’s amazing what you can find in your own backyard. To make this image, I didn’t have to go far from home - this towering forest of old growth is only a 10 minute drive from my house. Nonetheless, in the right light, it is a beautiful place to explore and photograph. This image looks straight up, with a dizzying wide angle perspective, giving one a sense of the grandeur of these trees.

The Pacific Northwest has some stunning scenes, but sometimes the beauty can be found in the details. I love Forever because it depicts the simplest of scenes - overlapping hills fading away into the distance - with the stunning colors of sunset. The colors on this day were enhanced by wildfire smoke in the air.

This image is an example of the transition of seasons, as fall gives way to winter. The night before I shot this image, a storm dumped 6 or 8 inches of snow on the Rainy Pass area, but then the clouds cleared for a beautiful bluebird day. This image depicts the iconic scene of Lake Ann surrounded by snowy mountains, with the beautiful yellow larch (tamarack) turning.

Extreme ironing combines an extreme sport or circumstance with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt, and I can’t think of a better place to iron than under the stars! Clothes Encounters of the Third Kind features a lone ironer focused on his shirt, under the arch of the summer Milky Way.

I love extreme ironing, and Satisfaction really takes it to the extreme! This image was made in Yellowknife, NWT in the middle of the night, at about -30C! Behind the ironer, steel wool spins and creates the mesmerizing fireball effect.

Ignition is quintessential Death Valley, with the beautiful salt flats of Badwater Basin as the star of the show. A solitary person explores the flats under the oppressive sun. To me, this image is what I think of when I think about Death Valley, the openness and the harshness, but also the stunning beauty.

Yellowstone National Park is a place of wonder and beauty, and The Edge is my favorite from that location. The scene depicts an arial view of tiny people on the boardwalk exploring Grand Prismatic Spring, lending an impressive sense of scale. I love the colors in this image!

The North Cascades are incredibly beautiful, and contain a huge variety of different landscapes. Artist Point is a favorite location of mine, as it is beautiful, diverse, and easy to access, at least during the few months in the summer it isn’t under snow. Alpine Ironing is my farewell to Artist Point for the year before the snows come and close the road.

The Pacific Northwest is known for its forests, and I love the challenge of trying to capture them on camera. There is so much chaos it can be hard to produce something compelling. But, Enchanted Forest is an example of what can happen when all the pieces align - beautiful forest, compelling composition, and amazing light.

Death Valley is an amazing and special place for me. I just love the textures and shapes that can be found everywhere, such as here in Dune, which depicts the interplay of light and shadow on the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes.

One of my all-time favorite prints, Achievement Unlocked features the beautiful aurora borealis (northern lights) over a small lake in the North Cascades. A solitary man alone with his tent completes the scene. I love the colors and the reflection in this image!
